As editor-in-chief of JVME, like most who know about the AAVMC
Iverson Bell Award and Symposia, I believed that I knew the story
of the man being honored. I knew that he was a veterinarian, one
of the few of his race in veterinary practice at the time, and his
leadership in the profession was documented by having served as
Vice President of the American Veterinary Medical Association
(AVMA). In preparing for this issue that highlights Dr. Iverson Bell
and those of like mind interested in increasing minority participation
in the veterinary profession, I elected out of personal interest to see
what new information I could find about his life. Through the miracle
of the Internet, I found the name Iverson Charles Bell listed many
times. The name that appeared again and again in my search was
that of a physician psychiatrist living in Atlanta, Iverson Charles Bell,
MD. This led me to wonder if this could be a relative because ‘‘How
many Iverson C. Bells can there be who are not related?’’ One
Sunday afternoon, I took the chance and called this ‘‘new Iverson
Bell’’ and wonder faded to awe when I discovered that Iverson C.
Bell, Jr., MD, was in fact the son of ‘‘our’’ Iverson Bell. Several
unforgettable conversations yielded much personal information
about the man that we honor, which complemented the facts we
already had. Yes, he lived up to the facts, but he was much more:
loving husband and father, mentor to neighborhood children, civic
leader, and professional leader, self-sufficient and self-assured.
AAVMC chose well in honoring this man who faced down racial bias
that fortunately few experience today. It is a privilege to know
Dr. Bell’s son who filled in the personal side of ‘‘our’’ honoree in
the paper titled The Live and Times of Iverson C. Bell, Sr., DVM.
Thank you Drs. Iverson C. Bell, both of you.
